Cobblestone — the drive that outlives you.

Natural granite or sandstone setts, laid by hand, bedded in mortar. The surface Rome used 2,000 years ago and we still install today — because nothing else ages like it.

Cobblestone costs more. And it's worth every penny if you own the right house.

Cobblestone isn't cheap. At £180–£300/m² it's the most expensive standard driveway option. But for the right property — period cottage, Georgian townhouse, conservation-area listed — it's the only surface that looks right.

The maths are unusual: cobblestone lasts 50+ years, often 100+. Block paving needs refreshing every 20. Over a lifetime, cobblestone is cheaper per year. And it adds more to house value than any other surface we install — valuers recognise it on sight.

Cobblestone types we install

Granite setts

The most durable option. Charcoal grey, silver grey, or Chinese black. Cuts and splits naturally, ages to a weathered patina. £200–£280/m².

Sandstone setts

Warmer colouring — buff, honey, rust. Softer underfoot, more grip. Slightly less durable than granite but will still outlive anyone reading this. £180–£240/m².

Reclaimed cobbles

Pulled from demolished 19th-century streets. Already weathered, character-rich, zero two alike. £220–£300/m². Limited availability.

Porphyry setts

Italian quartz-rich stone. Deep reds, purples, charcoals. Premium option for statement homes. £260–£350/m².

Installation — this is a specialist job

  1. 200mm excavation to firm ground.
  2. 150mm MOT Type 1 sub-base, compacted.
  3. 100mm concrete slab — cobblestone needs rigid bedding.
  4. 50mm mortar bed — setts pressed in individually.
  5. Mortar pointing of every joint — no kiln-dried sand for cobblestone.
  6. Optional sealing — usually skipped for period properties to allow natural ageing.

Patterns

  • Fan pattern — European cobbled-square classic. Complex to lay, stunning result.
  • Running bond — simpler, traditional, most cost-effective.
  • Herringbone — rare in cobblestone, striking where used.
  • Random / crazy — medieval look, irregular setts.

Cobblestone is for:

Period properties · Conservation areas · Heritage-listed homes · Country houses · Any home where "looking new" is actually wrong

What cobblestone really costs over 50 years

Block paving at £100/m² lasts 25 years then needs refreshing (£40–£60/m² to lift, clean, rejoint). Over 50 years you're at £140–£160/m² total.

Cobblestone at £250/m² needs almost nothing over 50 years. £250/m² total. Per year, cobblestone is cheaper. It just requires a bigger cheque upfront.

Common questions

About Cobblestone Driveways.

How long does cobblestone last?
Granite setts: 100+ years, realistically. There are 200-year-old cobblestone streets still taking traffic across Europe. Sandstone: 60–80 years before any meaningful wear. It's the longest-lived driveway surface you can install.
Is cobblestone OK for modern cars?
Fine for all domestic vehicles. The uneven surface is a feature, not a flaw — gives grip and character. Low-profile sports cars may feel more. Perfectly comfortable in any normal car.
Can I walk on cobblestone in heels?
Some setts have deeper joints than others. We can specify tighter-jointed setts for areas where heel-walking is a concern.
Do I need planning permission?
In a conservation area or for a listed building, yes — planning permission for any driveway change. We'll help you with the application, including heritage-impact statements where needed.
Can cobblestone be laid over existing concrete?
Sometimes — if the concrete is sound, we can bed directly onto it. More often we remove and start fresh to guarantee longevity.
Do cobblestone joints need sealing?
Traditional installs use mortar pointing (not sand), which is self-sealing. No separate sealant needed. Joints naturally weather and mellow over decades.
